Height

The height of your shift knob plays a role in how much bending stress is placed on the threads that the knob attaches to. The longer the extension or taller the knob, the more bending stress that is placed on those threads and it’s this bending stress that can cause them to break over time. This is true regardless of how gentle or aggressive the shifting is. A person who is very gentle with a long knob or extender may never see an issue ever while someone that uses their shifter incredibly aggressively could cause a fractured thread in a matter of weeks.

American Shifter’s shifter knob extensions increase the height of your shift knob to reduce your reach for the steering wheel and give you a more comfortable shift position. They are made of solid aluminum and are available in multiple colors and materials. Each one is 1.34 inches (34 mm) tall and threads onto your stock shift lever or our solid replacement shifter. They have a lock washer and 8 mm nut installed so they can be tightened down to secure the stud in place.

These shift knob extenders are perfect for JDM cars and have a slight bend to bring the shifter up a little more than a standard straight extender. They work with all of our shift knobs and are also compatible with the OEM shift lever in the Civic X.

Thread Pitch

A screw’s thread pitch is a crucial piece of information that helps ensure the right fit. The term ‘thread pitch’ refers to the distance between adjacent thread crests and is usually measured with a caliper. A screw’s thread pitch is important because it can affect how much effort it takes to tighten or loosen the fastener. This is because a screw with a coarser thread pitch has more flanks and thus a greater surface area than a screw with a finer thread pitch.

In general, thread pitches are determined by the standard for the type of screw being used. For example, an ISO 261 screw will have a coarse and fine thread version for each major diameter. The actual pitch diameter is defined as half of the difference between the major and minor diameters of the thread. In terms of screw geometry, the lead and the pitch are closely related because they determine how much a nut moves along the screw’s axis during one rotation.
